Dr. Miller’s training was at Louisiana Tech University (B.S. in Agriculture in 1988), Louisiana State University (M.S. in Agronomy & Soils in 1990) and Auburn University (Ph.D. in Agronomy & Soils in 1995). Prior to coming to NCSU, he was an Assistant/Associate/Professor at University of Florida working in Turfgrass Science teaching and research. In 2006 he was appointed Professor of Turfgrass Science at North Carolina State University. Dr. Miller has research responsibilities in turfgrass management and teaching in the four-year and graduate programs.

He is the co-author of Managing Bermudagrass Turf and Design, Construction, and Management of Bermudagrass Athletic fields. He has published over 150 articles dealing with all phases of turfgrass management. He is an active member of the International Turfgrass Society, American Society of Agronomy, Crop Science Society of America, Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, and the Sports Turf Managers Association.

Dr. Miller will be working closely with the sports turf industry to address issued specific to them. In previous studies, Dr. Miller has conducted research to characterize soccer field performance characteristics.

Fig. 1. Soccer field spatially mapped based on surface hardness. Spatial analysis of athletic fields provided new methods for evaluating field uniformity while indicating problem areas and resulting changes from management practices.

Previous studies by Miller have also evaluated water distribution by the golf course and homeowner segments of the turfgrass industry.

Photograph 1. Evaluation of irrigation distribution methodology on a golf green. Research in central Florida determined that normal irrigation practices could be easily changed, resulting in significant water savings. More dramatic results were documented in homeowner irrigation practices in combination with irrigation design and plant material selection.
