EDUCATION

RESEARCH

Dr. Milla-Lewis holds a 100% research appointment in the area of peanut breeding and genetics. Her main research focus is the application of molecular markers to peanut improvement. Current research activities include:

• Utilization of AFLP markers and conventional plant breeding approaches to characterize and transfer genetic resistance to tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) from wild relative Arachis diogoi into cultivated peanut.
• Identification of AFLP markers linked to resistance to Aspergillus flavus colonization in a set of Arachis cardenasii-derived germplasm lines of peanut.
• Use of SSR markers to assess the amount of unadpated germplasm retained through cycles of selection in breeding lines derived from unadapted x elite germplasm crosses in peanut.
• Development of populations derived from wild x cultivated crosses for mapping of disease resistance genes.

TEACHING

• AGI020 Spanish for Agriculture: Introductory conversational Spanish course specifically designed for agricultural students. The course main objective is to give students a basic understanding of the Spanish language and the necessary skills to utilize it within their chosen agricultural fields.
• CS211 Plant Genetics: Introductory genetics course designed for students in the plant science areas. The goal of this course is to provide students with a thorough knowledge of the basic principles and concepts of genetics, especially in regard to crop and horticultural plants.
