Research and Extension Efforts

Current research and extension programs are centered around weed management strategies in flue-cured and burley tobacco and the development of yield monitors and precision agriculture technology for tobacco production. Field research is conducted on research stations and on farms throughout the flue-cured and burley producing regions on North Carolina. Also assist tobacco Extension Specialists in all other areas of production and management research and extension programs.

Through the use of load cells on a harvester, a simple hand-held GPS receiver and software, yield maps can be created for use in tobacco production. Load cells can also be used to record "green weight" yields of plots in on-farm tests.
