Dr. Kuraparthy holds a 100% research appointment in the area of cotton genetics and breeding.
The primary focus of his research is germplasm development in cotton with a particular interest in the improvement of cotton yield and fiber quality. Another major focus of his research is developing biotic and abiotic stress tolerant cotton germplasm as desired by the cotton growers and industry. Developing new breeding methodologies based on molecular and genomic technologies especially techniques directed at the identification and utilization of novel genetic variation found in the wild ancestors of cotton is given major emphasis in the germplasm enhancement program. Developing genetic stocks using exotic germplasm in combination with molecular genetic technologies and utilizing these stocks for genetic and genomic analysis in cotton is an integral part of his program. Dr. Kuraparthy’s research also uses basic genetics, breeding, molecular and genomic approaches to investigate the fundamental processes in plant biology.
