SAN ANTONIO – Walter Thomas, a North Carolina State University student, won first place in the fourth annual Cotton Weed Science Research Conference’s Graduate Student Paper Contest.

The conference was one of 13 technical conferences that convened at the National Cotton Council-coordinated 2006 Beltwide Cotton Conferences earlier this month in San Antonio. Dr. Timothy Grey, an assistant professor at the University of Georgia, served as Weed Science Conference chairman this year.

Thomas, who won in the Ph.D. level, received $250 for his presentation, "Critical Period of Grass Versus Broadleaf Weed Interference in Cotton.” The second place winner and recipient of $150 was Darrin Dodds, a Mississippi State University student, for his presentation, “Utilizing Residual Herbicides in a Roundup Ready Weed Control Program.”

In the Masters level competition, Derek Scroggs, a Louisiana State University student, received $250 for his first place presentation, “Assessment of Weed Control Attained from Glyphosate with Companion Herbicides in Roundup Ready Flex Cotton.” North Carolina State University student Ashlee Spruill received $150 for her second place presentation, “Weed Population Dynamics in POST Layby Cotton.”

In the poster competition, Andrew Gardner, a Master’s student at NCSU, won first place and $150 for his poster, "Weed Management Systems in Liberty Link and Roundup Ready Flex Cotton".

The Cotton Weed Science Research Conference competition is designed to encourage outstanding graduate work in cotton Weed Science and promote graduate student attendance at the National Cotton Council-coordinated annual Beltwide Cotton Conferences. This year’s sponsors included FMC, Valent, Monsanto and Bayer CropScience.
