CROP SCIENCE

Professor of Crop Science, Animal Science, Plant Physiologist, USDA/ARS
PHONE: (919) 515-7599E-MAIL: joe.burns@ars.usda.govResponsible for the dynamics of the plant-animal interface considering the grazing behavior of animals relative to the nature of plant canopies, response of plant canopies to defoliation by animals and resulting plant species-animal interactions. Interests include competition and compositional shifts in pasture mixtures under varying grazing intensities, changes in forage nutritive value and quality characteristics from differing plant morphologies and maturities that occur in grazing or when harvested for stored feed. Member of the College Ecology Faculty.

Forage Specialist
PHONE: (919) 513-1335E-MAIL: se_johnson@ncsu.eduPasture and forages extension specialist.
Assistant Professor, Crop Science

Associate Professor of Crop Science and Animal Science
PHONE: (919) 515-8743E-MAIL: jean-marie_luginbuhl@ncsu.eduLeader of the Meat Goat and Forage Systems Research and Extension Program. His interests focus on the development of sustainable forage/browse-based feeding and management systems for meat goats. Current research include the evaluation of cool- and warm-season annual and perennial forages for meat goats, the use of meat goats in biocontrol of weed and brush-infested pastures and woodlots, the browse potential of fodder tree species in agroforestry systems for meat goats, the development of non-pharmaceutical approaches for the control of gastrointestinal parasites of meat goats, the evaluation of byproduct feeds as protein and/or energy sources for meat goats fed forage-based diets, and the determination of copper nutritional requirements and tolerance for meat goats.

Professor of Crop Science and CALS Sustainable Agriculture Coordinator
PHONE: (919) 515-5825E-MAIL: paul_mueller@ncsu.eduDr. Mueller has many years experience in agricultural extension, research, and teaching programs at North Carolina State University. He is the College of Agriculture and Life Science Coordinator for Sustainable Agriculture. and Coordinator for the Farming Systems Research Unit of The Center for Environmental Farming Systems. He has been involved with applied grassland farming research with ruminant animals including caprine silvo-pastoral systems and agricultural systems that integrate crops and livestock. Training, technology transfer and educational programs are designed for advisors, farmers and agribusiness personnel interested in sustainable agriculture principles and practices and those striving to improve pasture and grassland management.

Professor of Crop Science
PHONE: (919) 515-4070E-MAIL: jan_spears@ncsu.eduResponsible for seed production and stand establishment of agronomic, turf and forage crops. Her program includes studies to maximize seed quality through improved laboratory tests, production, conditioning and storage practices. She also directs research and extension on farm tests that explore the interactions of seed quality, soil environment and at-planting stand establishment products. She is responsible for extension activities in biotechnology educational programs.

Professor of Crop Science and Extension Specialist, and Co- Director of the CENTERE
PHONE: (919) 515-5639E-MAIL: fred_yelverton@ncsu.eduConducts applied research and extension activities in the area of turfgrass and forage crop weed management and plant growth regulators in turfgrasses. He is currently involved in several research projects investigating environmentally safe and economically sound weed management practices in turf and forages. He is particularly interested in the fate and behavior of herbicides in the environment. He teaches CS 053 - Weed Management in Turfgrasses and Ornamentals, and guest lectures in various turfgrass and weed management classes.
