Responsible for the dynamics of the plant-animal interface considering the grazing behavior of animals relative to the nature of plant canopies, response of plant canopies to defoliation by animals and resulting plant species-animal interactions. Interests include competition and compositional shifts in pasture mixtures under varying grazing intensities, changes in forage nutritive value and quality characteristics from differing plant morphologies and maturities that occur in grazing or when harvested for stored feed. Member of the College Ecology Faculty.

Current research and extension programs are centered around weed management strategies in flue-cured and burley tobacco and the development of yield monitors and precision agriculture technology for tobacco production. Field research is conducted on research stations and on farms throughout the flue-cured and burley producing regions on North Carolina. Also assist tobacco Extension Specialists in all other areas of production and management research and extension programs.

Dr. Mueller has many years experience in agricultural extension, research, and teaching programs at North Carolina State University. He is the College of Agriculture and Life Science Coordinator for Sustainable Agriculture. and Coordinator for the Farming Systems Research Unit of The Center for Environmental Farming Systems. He has been involved with applied grassland farming research with ruminant animals including caprine silvo-pastoral systems and agricultural systems that integrate crops and livestock. Training, technology transfer and educational programs are designed for advisors, farmers and agribusiness personnel interested in sustainable agriculture principles and practices and those striving to improve pasture and grassland management.

Dr. Schroeder is an ecologist with interests in tropical biology and application of ecological principles in a variety of agricultural ecosystems. Her investigations have included examining how arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi mediate competition among crops in monocultures and polycultures and how phosphorus fertilizers reduce crop growth responses to arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi.
